You could be forgiven in thinking the brown sediment packed Amazon would be relatively lifeless. Not so. Our first river boat cruise passed by a pod of grey freshwater dolphin. We watched them for a while as they jumped clear out of the water chasing fish.
We then turned down a small tributary and spent a frustrating 1/2 hour or so trying to catch piranha. Frustrating because although there were loads of fish around, the hooks we were using were far too big for them. Even the guides struggled. Most times you cast, the cube of beef on your hook would be removed in seconds by tiny razor sharp teeth. Only by chance would a strike get one. Jan decided her role was just to feed them. Keith did slightly better catching 4 which were cooked for our dinner.
On the way back we passed 3 cruising pink dolphins. Bigger than the grey ones (up to 9ft) they make a sneezing sound when exhaling through their blow holes. Unfortunately they didn´t give us the same acrobatic show as the grey ones so we couldn't´t really appreciate their unique shape or colour, but at least we saw them.

Surely the dolphin should have stayed underwater if they were chasing fish rather than jumping out...unless they fancied some flying fish...2nd cleverest mammal my arse
