We had to get up at 3am to catch the flight to Iquitos, a place so deep in the jungle that there are no roads to it. You either fly up or sail up the Amazon which takes 45 days from Lima. Yet, somehow, 500,000 people live there, and driving around you would never guess it was so remote.
We nearly died of exhaust fume poisoning on the city tour prior to arriving at the dock where a power boat was to take us to our Amazon lodge, Ceiba Tops. The old faithful tour company bus was 40 yrs old and had no windscreen, windows or doors.
Consequently we were totally exposed to the clouds of black smoke pouring out of the exhausts of whatever lorry we happened to be stuck behind. Not a very nice welcome to the rainforest.
