Peru´s government is not very popular. The current President, Alan Garcia, was President in 1985-1990 but was booted out for incompetence. So how did he get elected again? Julie explained that the other candidate was from the military so it was "the lesser of two evils" or "better the devil you know".
He doesn´t seem to have learned from his past mistakes and regularly makes decisions that so infuriate the populace that they engage in strikes or other forms of protest.
We narrowly missed one protest returning to Arequipa from Colca Canyon. Reports came through of roads being closed and massive demonstrations in the city centre. We delayed our return to Arequipa and by chance arrived just as the main roads were reopening. There were still boulders and lorry tyres blocking half the road and we had to weave our way through. " You are really lucky people" Julie said. The luck of the Bryants strikes again!
